Tuesday, 05 July 2011 - Porto Curvo, Sardinia, Italy
The mystery is solved. After passing the beautiful cliffs of southern Corsica with the fantastic skyline of Bonifacio and not being able to anchor and tender, we headed due South and then NE and then SE around the outlying islands of Sardinia to finally anchor offshore the little harbor of Porto Curvo, home of the very big fish and very little fish. That is to say, this is the place where the rich and famous feel intimidated by really rich dudes (presumably here for the sardines, but I could be wrong about that detail). At any rate, we could see the gigantic down to the just ostentatious yachts chockablock in the harbor. Even the Christina O is anchored there. Yes, that "O".
The Captain did replace the French flag with the good old Italian flag before we anchored, and indeed the sea and wind was fine for tendering by Silver Wind's cork-like stability tender/lifeboats. Actually a nice ride. That was about all that was really nice about the port. There is no town at Porto Curvo ("ch" like in church and rhymes with pervo) but rather a huge development of Southwest US adobe style condos and houses plus a little bevy of very expensive shops (closed for siesta) and places selling what was reported as 16 euro espressos. As usual, we were able to make the most of it by finding some paths that made for a hike with views of very rich (but not very svelte) yacht owners. We were turned back by finding an accusing sign that pointed me out apparently as not belonging.
We will have our last formal night tonight ("The Captain's Farewell Dinner") and then visit Elba (palindromic speaking I was able ere I saw, which I didn't yet) tomorrow before packing up and disembarking Thursday morning in Monte Carlo. We'll stay one night in Nice and then home on Friday. I promise after this very port and shore time intensive cruise ends I will be putting a number of pictures and some more philosophical commentary about the groups, Silversea's successes and a few remaining quirks, and making lots more fun of very rich but essentially silly people, Australian groups*, and of course the Peterson's.
*I took a picture today of one member of the "Captain's Choice" group with her label pin, her name tag, and a photo ID all on at once. She KNOWS she belongs! I also have some snapshots of one of the leader couples wearing their usual bright yellow golf shirts. Really bright yellow so that they are not missed by their charges who are busy reading each others name tags. And I also will discuss our very, very shinned shoes.
